Welcome 6th Grade AVID!
This project will help you develop your computer skills using three programs, Word, Excel and Powerpoint. There are four phases to this project.
Phase I of the project will be a keyboarding test. This test will assess how well and fast you can type. Your goal is 30 words per minute (WPM). When you are done, come back to this page to go to Phase II. Click on this link to get started. When you are done, see Ms. Cole to record your score.
For Phase II you will research a United States President. You may choose which President you want to research. You will find out as much information as possible about your president. When you are researching your president, take Cornell notes on the information you find. (You will turn in your notes for credit.) Then you will write a letter to me, using Microsoft Word, telling me about your president. Your letter will need to be in the correct format for a letter. Make sure you proofread for any spelling errors before turning it in. When you are done, see Ms. Cole to save it.
In Phase III your task is to research three US Presidents. You will create a spreadsheet that compares information for the three presidents. Use Microsoft Excel to create your spreadsheet. The information you need to gather includes: President's name, Wife's name, Number of children, Years served as President, Job prior to becoming President, Wartime or Peacetime President (Was there a war during his term?), and one other piece of information (example - Is his image on our money?). You may choose the three presidents you research, however you may not use the same president you wrote your letter on. Your spreadsheet should have the Presidents' Names on the columns and the other information listed in rows underneath each President. Make sure you proofread for any spelling errors before turning it in. When you are done, see Ms. Cole to save it.
Phase IV will require you to create a PowerPoint slideshow. This slideshow will be presented to your class as your final piece. You will need to see me for your the President you will research. Here are your links for researching your president - Presidents of the United States or Miller Center-University of Virginia. Your PowerPoint must have a minimum of 10 slides. You may include clip art and photos, but no sound. Your slides should be well organized, and not have any spelling errors. When you are done, see Ms. Cole to save it.
