Hello 8th graders!
This post will give you directions on the Career Research Project. The project has five phases to it.
Phase I - You need to register with College in Colorado and set up a profile. List Ms. Cole as your school counselor. Once you've set up your profile, go to the Career Center and complete the "My Interest Finder" survey. When you get your results, notify Ms. Cole so she can print them for you.
Phase II - Now that you've completed the Interest Survey, it's time to start researching possible careers. At the bottom of your Interest Survey results is a link, "find careers that match my interests". Follow that link to begin researching your career options. As you do your research complete Worksheet 1 (see Ms. Cole for a copy). When you have completed your worksheet return it to Ms. Cole.
Phase III - Using your research from Phase II, Ms. Cole will assign you a job and an annual salary. Now it's up to you to create a monthly budget. For this phase you will be calculating your gross and net income and your monthly expenses, including the purchase of a home and a car. You will complete Worksheet 2 for this phase. Go to www.cars.com to find an automobile and www.century21.com to find a home.
Phase IV - In this part of the project you will create a PowerPoint presentation of all the research you completed in Phases II and III. Your PowerPoint must follow the rubric. See Ms. Cole for a copy of the rubric. When you have completed your presentation, have Ms. Cole save it for you.
Phase V - Here's your opportunity to reflect on your learning during the entire project. See Ms. Cole for Worksheet 3.

Computer Skills Project - 6th Grade
Welcome 6th Grade AVID!
This project will help you develop your computer skills using three programs, Word, Excel and Powerpoint. There are four phases to this project.
Phase I of the project will be a keyboarding test. This test will assess how well and fast you can type. Your goal is 30 words per minute (WPM). When you are done, come back to this page to go to Phase II. Click on this link to get started. When you are done, see Ms. Cole to record your score.
For Phase II you will research a United States President. You may choose which President you want to research. You will find out as much information as possible about your president. When you are researching your president, take Cornell notes on the information you find. (You will turn in your notes for credit.) Then you will write a letter to me, using Microsoft Word, telling me about your president. Your letter will need to be in the correct format for a letter. To research your president, use these links: Presidents of the United States; or Miller Center-University of Virginia. For samples of letter styles, click here. Make sure you proofread for any spelling errors before turning it in. When you are done, see Ms. Cole to save it.
In Phase III your task is to research three US Presidents. You will create a spreadsheet that compares information for the three presidents. Use Microsoft Excel to create your spreadsheet. The information you need to gather includes: President's name, Wife's name, Number of children, Years served as President, Job prior to becoming President, Wartime or Peacetime President (Was there a war during his term?), and one other piece of information (example - Is his image on our money?). You may choose the three presidents you research, however you may not use the same president you wrote your letter on. Use these links to research your presidents Presidents of the United States or Miller Center-University of Virginia. Your spreadsheet should have the Presidents' Names on the columns and the other information listed in rows underneath each President. Make sure you proofread for any spelling errors before turning it in. When you are done, see Ms. Cole to save it.

Here are your links for researching your president - Presidents of the United States or Miller Center-University of Virginia. Your PowerPoint must have a minimum of 10 slides. You may include clip art and photos, but no sound. Your slides should be well organized, and not have any spelling errors. When you are done, see Ms. Cole to save it.
